Susan Kuchinskas with The Chemistry of Connection

    About the Book:

When we make love, when we’re stroked, when we spend time with close friends, and even when we pet an animal, our brains respond by releasing pulses of oxytocin. This chemical, produced by the hypothalamus, floods the brain and body with feelings of connection, trust, and contentment. Researchers believe that this natural, powerful "love drug" plays an important role in all human social relationships.
    The Chemistry of Connection
offers new information about how brain chemistry affects our platonic and intimate relationships and explains how oxytocin research can help us understand the psychological differences between men and women. But the book goes beyond detailing the biochemistry of love. It offers practical tips and guidance to help readers increase their natural supply of oxytocin in order to develop deep connections with family, friends, and romantic partners.

About Chemistry of Connection: You may have heard of oxytocin, known as the "cuddle hormone." It's responsible for letting us feel life's most wonderful emotions. When we make love, when we’re stroked, even when we spend time with close friends, oxytocin floods our bodies with feelings of love, trust and contentment. This naturally secreted brain chemical is also the secret to forming committed relationships, turning lust into long-lasting love.

But this love chemistry can go awry. When it does, we may bounce from one disastrous relationship to another, falling madly in love with wrong person after wrong person, while caring suitors leave us cold.

The good news is, we can revitalize the body's powerful urge to bond when it's safe and right. I want to tell your listeners how to maximize their supply of this feel-good chemical in everyday life and how they can work to fundamentally change their emotional chemistry so that loving and trusting become as natural as breathing.

    About the Author:
Susan Kuchinskas is a journalist with more than fifteen years of experience who has published thousands of articles on science, technology, and culture. Her work has appeared in Time, Wired, and many other publications. Visit her oxytocin blog online at hugthemonkey.com

Susan Kuchinskas is a journalist and author. Her book, "The Chemistry of Connection: How the oxytocin response can help you find trust, intimacy and love," was published by New Harbinger in April 2009. She writes the blog "Hug the Monkey," which tracks research, news and commentary about oxytocin's role in our daily lives. She also covers internet advertising, health and green fuels for a variety of publications. Susan lives in Berkeley, Calif. with Mike, her partner of 12 years, a neurotic dog, a frog and a couple of hives of bees.

Dr. Nancy Irwin with her new book You Turn.

YOU-TURN: Changing Direction in Mid-life is a collection of “over 40 stories of people over 40.” The inspiring stories are from a diversity of real people who started a new path—and will motivate you to do the same. A grieving mother started a school for the leprosy-affected in India; a crack dealer became a real estate investor; a 73-year-old singer enrolled in law school; a catering director started rehabbing used cars for low-income people; a Harvard lawyer became a New Age healer, and more. Click on “About the Book” for complete chapter-by-chapter synopses.

Whether you’re looking to change careers, begin a relationship, have children, find meaning, or just find balance, this book is for you. It also includes a “driver’s manual” and tips on easing yourself into a life change.

THIS BOOK WILL HELP YOU. . .

    • Identify what’s not working for you anymore
    • Explore where you might want to go
    • Create a roadmap for going in the direction of your choice
    • Transfer skills from your “wrong” direction to enhance your right one
    • Overcome fears that prevent most people from changing
    • Learn how your unconscious has been programmed—and reprogram it
    • Design and live a life that fulfills you
    • Get motivated to pull a 180!

    About the Author:

In her own words, Dr. Irwin says,
"I believe every child's birthright is that his or her sexuality will blossom in its own time. Sexual abuse thwarts that right.

With all humility, I wish there had been someone like me around when I needed help. We, fortunately, live in terribly exciting times when this issue is 'out of the closet' and help is readily available.

I can't remember a time when music wasn't a part of my life; indeed I believe I'm a connoisseur of beautiful sounds. And there is nothing on earth more exquisite than the sound of children's laughter. We can heal and find that happy, loving child within us again ... that child who simply wants to celebrate the joy of living."

Dr. Nancy Irwin graduated from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute in Tarzana, California with honors and the Director's Award. She is a member of the Hypnotists' Union, the California Psychological Association, the American Academy for Experts in Traumatic Stress, and the California Coalition on Sexual Offending (CCOSO).
Dr. Irwin is also a certified practitioner of Neurolinguistic Programming, Time Line Therapy and Emotion Free Therapy, combining these modalities with hypnosis to effect the most rapid change possible in her clients. While Dr. Irwin treats over 100 different issues, she is dedicated to treating victims of child sexual abuse as well as abusers.
In addition to earning a doctorate in psychology from Southern California University of Professional Studies, Nancy has a Master of Music degree in Opera Performance, and her background as an opera singer and stand-up comedian adds heart and humor to her healing. A popular keynote speaker she insists, "Change does not have to hurt!"

    NEW NONFICTION YOU-TURN SHOWS
IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO TURN AROUND IN LIFELOS ANGELES - March 11, 2009 - Dr. Nancy Irwin, a Los Angeles-based psychotherapist, introduces her new nonfiction book titled You-Turn: Changing Direction in Midlife. This collection of "over 40 stories of people over 40" chronicles successful transitions in people's personal and/or professional lives. Originally from Atlanta, where she trained as an opera singer, Dr. Irwin moved to New York City in 1985 to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian. She worked all over the country and abroad, and moved to L.A. in 1994 when she heard that Hollywood needed more blondes. She quips: "The road from comedy to mental health is very short, indeed." Dr. Nancy experienced an epiphany when she began volunteering for a shelter for sexually abused children. It changed her life, and prompted her to pursue a doctorate in psychology and to specialize in the prevention and healing of child sexual abuse. You-Turn not only shares her own story, but also 43 other you-turns from a variety of people - some simple, some dramatic: a convicted crack dealer who became a real estate investor, a mother of nine who started a foundation for the leprosy-affected, a monk who became a motivational speaker, a recovering pedophile, a man who became a spouse and parent after 40, a woman who finally embraced her sexual identity after years of denial and abuse, and more. The stories are divided into two parts: change by default (injury, break-up, lay-off, etc.) and change by choice (boredom, lack of fulfillment, etc). Like a Chicken Soup for the Soul for Baby Boomers, this book is for the fearful and frozen..anyone who feels stuck in struggle yet really wants to move forward. Dr. Irwin states: "I've included some professional tips on navigating change at any age, but the emphasis of the book is on the stories told in first person. Everyone can identify with one or more of the stories in this book. I did not want to write an academic 'do-this-in-order-to-feel-that' book, because what has helped me reinvent myself so many times was seeing real-life people do amazing things. I figured if they could do it, why couldn't I? It is my hope that we all begin seeing you-turns everywhere, so they become the rule rather than the exception. Twenty- and thirty-somethings especially can benefit from these stories so they will feel free to explore, question choices, and change directions, to avert what used to be called a "middle age crisis." We now call it a middle age blaze!!!"
